The Cartier Magnum Tank from 1964 (estimate €200,000 – 400,000) is one of the rarest Cartier watches you’ll ever see, and yet it’ll most certainly go for far less than a record-breaking London Crash. Unlike the “exceedingly rare” Audemars Piguet calendars retailed by Cartier, this is even rarer: a watch manufactured by Cartier France with an AP movement. Each dial on these Tanks was made in a unique configuration as well. Meanwhile, Lot 108, an oversized Patek ref. 530 in steel with black dial and gold Breguet numerals comes from John Goldberger’s collection. This is arguably the rarest and most important Calatrava reference, and yet, as Ben pointed out in 2017, scholarship has only in the last 15-20 years even really acknowledged them. Similar watches have a varied past at auction, from CHF 415,500 to CHF 1,445,000 between 2016 and 2017, but the estimate here is €250,000 – 500,000.
