Cult followers of the late-‘80s Dodge Shelby GLHS rejoice; we’ve found an original, meticulously maintained one-owner 1987 Dodge Shelby Charger GLHS, and it’s up for auction on Hemmings right now.
The automotive world wouldn’t be the same without the legendary Carroll Shelby pumping performance into cars like the Shelby Cobra and Mustang. He is known best for his enhancements to rear-wheel drive sports cars and muscle cars, but he didn’t leave front-wheel drive vehicles in the dust. For example, beginning in the 1983, Shelby assisted Chrysler in modifying the Dodge Charger with more refined suspension and styling. By 1985, the Shelby Charger was bumped from 107-horsepower to 146 with the addition of a new Garrett T3 turbocharged 2.2-liter engine equipped with Bosch multiport fuel injection.
The Dodge Shelby Charger model continued until 1987, but when Dodge announced it was dropping the Charger for 1988, the Shelby Corporation purchased the last 1,000 examples and created a very special model that would gain a cult following: the Dodge Shelby Charger GLHS. Much like the Dodge Omni GLH (Goes Like Hell) and GLHS (Goes Like Hell S’more) models, the Dodge Shelby Charger GLHS offered a substantial power boost. The addition of an air-to-air intercooler and a Shelby-designed intake manifold to the 2.2-liter Turbo II engine aided in bumping the power from 146 to 175 horses, which can propel the Shelby Charger from zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds.
The GLHS models represented the peak in performance for these cars and this 1987 Dodge Shelby Charger GLHS is an exceptional example of what these cars were like back then. The engine hasn’t been tampered with and the exterior and interior appears clean and cared for. It’s said to be offered by the original owner, who’s put only 22,878 miles on it. Photos and videos on the auction listing support these claims and show a vehicle in brag-worthy condition.
