Gran Turismo is hitting the big screen, and this time it’s not a new video game release. Sony Pictures Entertainment released the official trailer for the new Gran Turismo movie yesterday, stating that it is based off a true story about a Nissan GT Academy winner who went from gamer to racer.
The Nissan GT Academy was created by Nissan and Sony in 2008. The program allows gamers to compete in sim racing for a chance to drive for Nissan’s real life race team. The Gran Turismo movie highlights the experience of Jann Mardenborough, one of the Nissan GT Academy winners who traded sim racing for the real deal.
If the trailer is any indication, the Grand Turismo movie is jam packed with racing action. Actor Archie Madekwe plays the role of Mardenborough, a passionate Gran Turismo player who earns a spot in the GT Academy much to his father’s dismay. Mardenborough races the Nissan GT-R against Lamborghinis and other GT-Rs. Drama ensues, a fiery crash erupts on the screen, and Mardenborough escapes the fire. The trailer ends with many gear changes, engine revs, and cheers. This is where we remind everyone that just because a movie is based on a true story, that doesn’t mean it is all true, but creative freedom certainly will keep movie viewers at the edge of their seats.
