58 Wallaroy Rd, Woollahra, sold for $11.03m. The guide was $8m.
A grand old Bellevue Hill home has just sold at auction for $11.03m, $3m over the price guide, as the buyer’s mum whispered: ‘If you want it, just buy it!”
The four-bedroom Mediterranean-inspired residence at 58 Wallaroy Rd had been purchased by the current owner’s grandmother “fully furnished” for £8000 in 1949.
Richardson & Wrench Double Bay agents Michael Dunn and Marion Badenoch had an $8m guide for last night’s auction, but there were 11 registered and six fighting over it in a “battle royale”, hence the huge price.
Auctioneer Damien Cooley had called it onto the market at $10m.

The house was built in 1929.

It’s been in the same family since 1949.
Separate sources overheard the elderly mum saying the encouraging words to inspire her middle-aged son doing the bidding, who’d entered the race at $7.25m after the opening bid of $7m.
Entrepreneur Tim Holmes a Court, who married Lavaza importing heiress Amanda Valmorbida in 2020 and is a relative of Australia’s first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court, made the third bid of $7.5m, but dropped out after that.
Those in the busy auction room couldn’t identify the buyer, though the underbidder was stockbroker Walter Lewin, who’d also been the underbidder way back in 2010 when Lachlan Murdoch bought Le Manoir, the grand Georgian house in Bellevue Hill, for $23m.

Outdoor entertaining.
It was a two-horse race between Lewin and the purchaser from $10m, who were exchanging $50k; $60k and then $25k bids all the way to $11.025m. Then the buyer nabbed it with a $5k offer taking it to $11.03m.
No-one so many were keen. The charming period home on a 698sqm block was designed by the renowned architect Deric (Frederick) Deane as his own private home and completed in 1929.
It had been so loved by its current owners that it’s stayed in the same family since 1949, passing from grandmother, to daughter, to daughter to granddaughter.

It’s understood the purchasers want to renovate the current home.
At the time of the listing, Michael Dunn told the Wentworth Courier: “This really is a pedigree property created by one of the most prominent architects of the 1930s for himself.”
It was packed with historic details, including high ceilings, Juliet balconies, a log-burning fireplace in the lounge room, wrought-iron balustrades, wooden shutters and a sandstone courtyard with off-street parking.
