History of Fingal Edinburgh
Fingal has a storied history that is a testament to the city’s maritime heritage. Built by the Blythswood Shipbuilding Company in Glasgow, she was originally named MV Fingal and launched as a lighthouse tender in 1963.
The vessel played a vital role in maintaining Scotland’s offshore beacons for many years. She was decommissioned in 2000. In January 2019, after careful restoration and refurbishment, Fingal opened as a luxury floating hotel.
These days, Fingal offers guests a unique and unforgettable experience in the heart of Edinburgh’s picturesque port district. She is owned by The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust.
The Design of Fingal Edinburgh
When the Royal Yacht Britannia team acquired Fingal, they transformed her into a beautiful, floating hotel. Renovations took place over two years, preserving many of the original features of the ship.
The striking Art Deco inspired design of Fingal is nothing short of impressive. The sleek curves, rich hues, and intricate detailing of the interior creates a sophisticated ambiance that transports guests to a glamorous era.
The masterminds behind this luxurious space are interior designers Alan Pedley and Stephen Flanagan. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for timeless elegance, their expertise is evident throughout every corner of this unique hotel.
Fingal’s interior design is also inspired by its Scottish heritage, and boasts a luxurious finish with rich wood panelling, brass fittings, and leather upholstery.

We were fortunate to stay in a Classic Duplex Cabin, spread over two floors. A spiral staircase leads from the elegant living area to the bedroom, shower room and separate WC.
In the bedrooms, you’ll find cosy tartan throws and cushions designed by Araminta Campbell . The shower-rooms and bathrooms boast brass taps, Noble Isle toiletries, and fluffy bathrobes.

Guests of Fingal can enjoy a fine dining experience at The Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar. This stylish restaurant has floor to ceiling windows and comfy booths. Enjoy dinner, afternoon tea or an expertly mixed cocktail at the bar.
Awarded 2 AA Rosettes, it specializes in Scottish-inspired menus using locally-sourced ingredients. In fact, Fingal’s herbs are grown quayside in their very own Herb Garden.
We particularly liked the salmon, which is smoked on board, as well as the Orkney scallops and Peterhead hake. Save room for a fig tarte tatin dessert!
At the Lighthouse bar, try a Lighthouse Bar Martini or Yard No. 140, Fingal’s name when she was first commissioned. Fingal even has her own gin produced by Lind & Lime Distillery, made with botanicals from the Fingal Meadow and their Fingal Tea blend.
The Lighthouse is open to non-residents with prior bookings for lunch, dinner and afternoon tea. Overnight guests can enjoy a delicious a la carte breakfast.
