What Is Agua Fresca?
Agua fresca is very popular in Latin America. It’s considered a whole category of water-based drinks that are made with any combination of fruits, veggies, seeds, or herbs. They’re super easy to make, with most of them only requiring you to blend everything together. Cucumber agua fresca is one of the most popular kinds along with Watermelon Agua Fresca.

Recipe Ingredients
Cucumber and lime juice are one of the most refreshing flavor combinations. Check the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact amounts.
- Cucumbers: I highly recommend using regular waxed cucumbers, as they have a higher water content. Do not use the thin, long hot house cucumber variety that is sold wrapped in plastic.
- Water
- Granulated Sugar: Raw honey, agave syrup, light brown sugar, or dark brown sugar are great swaps.
- Lime Juice: Lemon juice works too. Freshly squeezed will give you the best flavor.
- Salt
- Ice

Tips & Variations
There are several cheats to making agua de pepino (a.k.a. cucumber agua fresca) much easier and even fizzier.
- Add chia. Adding 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds to the mixture after straining will give you another popular variety of cucumber-lemon agua fresca.
- Leave the peel. Save a bit of time and leave the peel on the cucumbers. It’s super yummy and has added health benefits as well!
- Don’t strain it. You don’t have to strain the mixture for this recipe. It’s very common to find un-strained cucumber agua fresca at restaurants.
- Make it fizzy. Swapping the water for sparkling water or Sprite can give your drink a good bit of fizziness.

Can Agua de Pepino Be Prepared in Advance?
Of course! Prepare this cucumber agua fresca as usual and refrigerate it up to 2 days in advance. Don’t add the ice until right before serving so it doesn’t water down. If you’re making the fizzy version, I also recommend leaving out the sparkling water or Sprite until the very end.
Can I Freeze This?
Yes! This recipe can also be made ahead and frozen into ice cubes or in freezer-friendly bags for up to 6 months. Thaw it in the fridge and serve as usual.
