The UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB) Forward Faster Sustainability Awards 2023 recognised Heineken Malaysia Berhad (HEINEKEN Malaysia) for its outstanding leadership in fostering resilience for water-related concerns. Winning the Water Resilience category, the award recognised the brewer’s advancements under the Towards Healthy Watersheds programme.
This award builds on the company’s track record as a UNGCMYB member, having previously won two awards in 2022 for the UN SDG benchmarks of “Net-positive water impact in water-stressed basins” and “Zero waste to landfill and incineration.”
“It is an honour for us to be recognised two years in a row as a champion for our efforts in water conservation. Guided by HEINEKEN’s Brew A Better World sustainability strategy, our team has designed and implemented initiatives that focus on improving the way we use and protect water as a key resource for our business. We also continue our collaboration with government agencies, civil society, and local communities to conserve our watersheds, which are the precious sources of water. We cannot do this alone and hope to inspire more companies and organisations to care for our watersheds.”
Roland Bala, HEINEKEN Malaysia’s Managing Director
A crucial component of the business’s Brew a Better World sustainability plan is the Towards Healthy Watersheds initiative. The brewer demonstrates its commitment to environmental responsibility in its 2030 roadmap, which outlines specific goals for safe, clean, and sustainable watersheds using three strategies: water efficiency, water circularity, and water balancing.
Water Efficiency: By 2030, HEINEKEN Malaysia hopes to decrease its water consumption to an average of 2.6 hectoliters for each hectolitre of beer produced. Some of the main projects involve replacing equipment and utilities to use less water during manufacturing, cutting down on leaks and waste, and investigating new cleaning technologies. The brewer recorded a 20% drop from its 2014 baseline and a 5% reduction from 2021 when its water use as of 2022 was 3.45 hl/hl.
Water Circularity: By treating all of its wastewater, HEINEKEN Malaysia ensures that water utilisation is maximised through recovery, reuse, and recycling. This was accomplished by the brewer through recording and monitoring its effluent discharge and making sure that all of its wastewater was treated above the Department of Environment’s standards. A 780 million litre annual capacity wastewater treatment plant is another feature of the brewery. Therefore, in terms of wastewater norms and regulations, the brewer recorded zero non-compliance in 2022. The Sungei Way Brewery’s general cleaning and gardening operations are among the non-potable uses of processed wastewater that the company is currently exploring ways to recover and reuse.
Water Balancing: For every 1 litre of water used in its products, HEINEKEN Malaysia targets to balance 1.5 litres of water through conservation initiatives in the watershed. The company has been exceeding its water balancing targets every year since 2020, with a 203% performance in 2022. With a dedication to promoting water security outside of its brewery walls, HEINEKEN Malaysia’s approach to water stewardship extends beyond internal management. The company’s corporate responsibility arm, SPARK Foundation, and environmental NGO, Global Environment Centre, collaborate to carry out the WATER Project (Working Actively Through Education & Rehabilitation). The project’s main initiatives include:
- Rehabilitation and conservation of Sungai Way to maintain water quality at Class III.
- A 305-metre clay dyke at the Raja Musa Forest Reserve, that prevents forest fires and contributes to the sustainability of Sungai Selangor.
- Reforestation to rehabilitate degraded peatland and increase the water table in the Raja Musa Forest Reserve.
- Rainwater harvesting systems for 23 communities in Selangor, reducing dependence on treated water for non-potable uses.
HEINEKEN Malaysia declared in 2023 that it will increase its water stewardship project funding by an additional RM6 million over the course of eight years, until 2030. This is intended to raise awareness and encourage action by bringing together different stakeholders to work towards a common objective of protecting the health of watersheds in the Klang Valley.
“Our water conservation journey started 16 years ago in 2007, with the humble beginnings of engaging our surrounding communities to rehabilitate Sungai Way. Since then, we have channelled close to RM15 million to grow the initiative and enabled programmes that reached more than 30,000 people in communities that continue to play a role in protecting our rivers. We are committed to delivering our Brew A Better World ambitions and we are humbled to receive these awards as a recognition of the significant effort and progress we are making.”
Renuka Indrarajah, HEINEKEN Malaysia’s Corporate Affairs & Legal Director
A finalist in the Climate Action category, HEINEKEN Malaysia was acknowledged for the strides it is making in achieving its Net Zero goals. Compared to its 2018 baseline, the brewer has cut Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 49% as of 2022. The Sungei Way Brewery of the company made the switch to 100% renewable electricity during the year. It also maintained its zero waste to landfill status by upcycling and recycling all production waste, and it is currently working on installing on-site solar energy systems that will replace 15% of its annual electricity consumption.
