Introduction to Naturhotel Forsthofgut
Imagine a hotel nestled within a lush forest, where the only sounds you hear are the soft rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. Step inside Naturhotel Forsthofgut, and you’ll discover a world of relaxation and rejuvenation in the midst of nature.
Owned by the Schmuck family, this beautiful 5 star hotel is nestled at the base of the Leogang mountains. Naturhotel Forsthofgut has a long tradition of welcoming guests – in fact, Christoph Schmuck and his wife Christina are fifth generation hoteliers.
They had a vision to create a nature hotel that will bring a smile to your face. As well as guest satisfaction, the hotel focuses on staff well-being, and a new Employee Campus is currently being constructed.
Set in a large garden with stylish sun terraces, this luxurious Austrian hotel is the perfect place to unwind from everyday life. As soon as you step into the cosy lobby, you’ll feel right at home.
Nature-inspired Rooms and Suites:
The rooms and suites at Naturhotel Forsthofgut Leogang are designed to provide the ultimate comfort while keeping nature at the forefront. The use of natural materials such as wood, stone and linen creates an ambiance that is not only inviting but also serene.
The spacious accommodation offers a stunning view of the mountains or the hotel’s park. Each room is equipped with modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, high-speed internet, and luxurious bathrooms.
There are several family suites, and the standalone Alpine Hut. We stayed in the incredible Chalet Suite (room 136) with a huge balcony overlooking the lake. Spread over 145 m², there’s a private sauna, two spacious en-suite bedrooms, a children’s bedroom with two bunk-beds and a stunning living area with an open fireplace.
Guests will also discover thoughtful touches like a yoga mat, weights and a rucksack to borrow. You can use the tablet in your room to book spa treatments and other activities.
WaldSPA:
The multiple award-winning WaldSPA has a unique blend of traditional and modern therapies that are designed to restore balance and harmony. With 5,700 m², it features an indoor and outdoor pool, an organic bathing lake, sauna, steam room, fitness center, and a range of massage and beauty treatments. Clothing is worn in the textile saunas and the Family & Kids Spa, the rest are textile free zones.
Embrace the peaceful surroundings, while enjoying a rejuvenating spa treatment or yoga class. WaldSPA Lake House, open to children and adults, has an outdoor infinity pool overlooking the mountains and a natural lake.
The Adults-only waldSPA extends over 3,500 m² and boasts a 42° Onsen Pool, 36° outdoor whirlpool, 60° herbal sauna, 90° Finnish Lake Sauna, infrared cabins and spacious relaxation lounges. The whirlpool can be rented exclusively after 9pm, from 430 Euros with Champagne and strawberries.
There are several spacious treatment rooms and a great range of spa treatments such as face HIIT, lymph drainage, wave balance and forest massages outdoors. I tried the classic 50 minute massage with expert therapist Sladan. It’s designed to detect and release tension in the body through deep, gentle strokes.
On certain days, you can also do your own salt or sugar peeling in the adults only steam sauna. We tried this and it left our skin feeling super smooth.
WaldSPA Fitness is an adults only gym with the latest high-tech equipment. Next to it you’ll find the SonnenGRUSS yoga room.
Gourmet Dining Experience:
Dining at Naturhotel Forsthofgut Leogang is a culinary experience in itself. The hotel has three a la carte restaurants – traditional Restaurant 1617, Japanese restaurant Mizumi set on the lake and fine dining restaurant “echt. gut essen”.
Each restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients to create a range of dishes that are not only delicious but also healthy. You can choose between three different options or mix and match dishes from each: Alpine-Mediterranean, Vegan and R50.
The latter features ingredients from within 50 kilometers or less – some from the hotel’s own farm. Dishes change daily so there are lots of options to choose from.
The hotel also has the Botanist Bar where you can try its signature cocktails garnished with fresh herbs and fruits.
Each day, complimentary afternoon tea known as strudelTIME is available – which is different from a traditional British afternoon tea but very tasty. It usually features a range of cheeses, bread and fruit, although not strudel during our stay.
WeinWALD is a wine cellar inspired by the forest. It’s an ideal setting for wine tastings and foodie events.
The hotel’s sommelier team, headed up by Katrin Halbwachs, is on hand in the restaurants to advise you on the best wine or sake for your meal. And why not try one of the hotel’s very own wines – Mr. Red, Mrs. White, Lady Blush, Sir Sparkling and Sweet Baby.
The breakfast buffet at Naturhotel Forsthofgut is one of the best we have ever encountered. There are multiple types of mountain honey, a huge array of cold cuts, cheeses and healthy options such as salad, fruit and yoghurts.
While the dress code at Naturhotel Forsthofgut is informal, wearing something smart for dinner is appreciated.

As well as pony or horse rides, you can book alpaca walks – a unique experience that we loved! The alpacas are gentle and love eating grass.
WaldSPA Family & Kids offers select treatments for children aged between 5 and 12, as well as for teenagers. This includes manicures, gentle skincare and relaxing massages.
The Children’s Water World has two pools with a temperature of 33 degrees, a 70-meter-long giant slide and a mini slide in the baby pool.
