Awards season keeps rolling merrily along, ending with the Oscars on March 12, but before the grande dame of red carpet events, stars once again slipped into their designer gowns and suits, called in their glam teams, and headed to Century City, California, for the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards — aka the SAG Awards 2023.
Because the SAG Awards is an insider, actors-only ceremony where SAG members cast the winning votes, it has a slightly more relaxed and fun vibe than some of the more formal awards ceremonies. For the 2023 installment, stars stepped out of the box fashion-wise, experimenting with archival vintage like Zendaya‘s rose-bedecked pastel pink Valentino gown and Jenna Ortega‘s high-low ’90s Versace with layers of black ruffles — something Wednesday Addams would definitely approve of. Everything Everywhere All At Once star Stephanie Hsu also experimented with the high-low trend in her pretty rose Carolina Herrera gown, and Cara Delevingne wore slim trousers under a billowing skirt.
Besides the high-low looks, we noticed a few prevalent trends on the carpet, including many bright, cheerful colors. Angela Bassett did the thing (sorry, had to) in a sunshine yellow tulle Giambattista Valli mermaid hem gown, and Viola Davis and Niecy Nash also opted for the canary color. Some stars sported ocean-inspired looks, like Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson in her mermaid-chic Jean-Louis Sabaji column gown with a shell bodice and White Lotus star Haley Lu Richardson in a strapless Carolina Herrera gown covered in pearls. The guys also experimented with color, with Elvis star Austin Butler standing out in a ’70s-inspired deep burgundy tux.
