In the time I’ve known Montanari, he’s shown a penchant for nonchalance in the least obnoxious and most sincere way possible. His seriousness when posing for portraits belies his warmth and willingness to freely share what information he can with other curious collectors. Yes, I’ve seen him pull a watch out of his pocket before opening it with a thumbnail or knife as we ate lunch, not to recreate the moment from Talking Watches, but to show me a movement or dial construction. There was the time I uttered the name of one of the most obscure vintage watch brands few people have mentioned in decades, and, of course, he had a picture of one on his phone. Time after time, Montanari has shown an appreciation for rarity and design in things people rarely would give a second thought – until they become insanely collectible decades later. But if Goldberger – er, Montanari – the collector who has seen nearly everything, is the man you want giving input on watch design, I’d argue that Furlan Marri has quickly become one of the best brands you could ask for to make that design a reality.
