You remember those little moments like that, but then you also remember that you’re flying a war machine, and you’re learning how to drop bombs, shoot the gun, and you do a lot of dangerous stuff. I’ve almost killed myself about 100 times in 20 years. You go to way too many funerals, and it’s a dangerous business. So, it’s a real sobering, serious, dangerous life. That’s why when people say, “Well don’t you miss it?” I say, “I really am okay with not doing it every day anymore. I could still walk away from it, a lot of my good friends never lived to do that.” So, when you have those little moments of joy in the face of all of that serious go-to-war mentality, it really does stick in your mind.
